Abstract

 Based on Book 1 of the City of God, this article intends to analyze the thoughts of Saint Augustin about suicide from two angles. On one side, the solid arguments the author offers aiming at the condemnation of such practice, under the lights of the Christian faith. It is the power of his logic. On the other side, his concession in certain cases within Christianism, and his vehement condemnation of similar cases practiced by pagans in a context where preservation of honor was intended. It is the power of casuistry.
