Abstract

The jew, by Bernardo Santareno, is an authentic allegory about oppression. Starting from the story of Antonio José da Silva, the jew, executed by the Inquisition in the eighteenth century, the author makes a vehement criticism of Portugal under Salazar. He also makes bitterly evident the inefficiency of the struggle against obscurantism which, one way or the other, will always exist. Within this context, the didascalies play an important role, specially if the buiding up of an ideology is considered.
