Abstract

Gamification aims to facilitate everyday, non-ludic processes through elements and dynamics of play that promote the motivation and engagement of it's participants. This article shares the results of research that explores gamification's potential to support the work of non-professional ("informal") caregivers of older adults: the most common type of care received by this population, and characterized by significant emotional effort on the part of the caregiver. The use of gamification techniques on a Facebook group for informal caregivers reaffirms their need for information and emotional support, as well as the need to balance intrinsic and extrinsic motivators to foment their participation in the gamified system.
