Contemporary society is experiencing an era of exacerbation of hate speech, generating a climate of hostility that strains collectivities. In Brazil, hate speech in the current electoral political scene justifies violence against minorities and political opponents. Understanding that violence is a social construction (Chauí; Arendt) that is expressed in various spheres of human relations, this work intends to analyze the relationship between hate speech (Waldron) and the violence contained therein, reflecting on the statement: “Let’s shoot the gunfire here in Acre!” and its consequences. Discourse analysis instruments will be used (Charaudeau; Orlandi). It is concluded that hate speech in the current Brazilian political scene corrupts the democratic and tolerant atmosphere.
