Resumen

Los juegos de rol analógicos brindan a los jugadores una forma de explorar una diversidad de experiencias y autoconceptos, desempeñando nuevos roles en una realidad ficticia creada conjuntamente. Este artículo proporciona un marco teórico para este proceso, discutiendo la naturaleza de la realidad consensuada como una fuerza que puede suprimir formas de expresión de identidad que los individuos consideran auténticas. Discutimos cómo los larps y los juegos de mesa pueden proporcionar continentes transformadores donde las personas pueden explorar nuevas formas de ser, relacionarse y representar creencias a través de la experiencia de una mayor agencia. Como ejemplo, discutimos nuestro larp, ​​Euphoria, que fue diseñado como un entorno de juego de rol que refleja espacios de actuación queer dentro de los cuales los participantes pueden expresar identidades sexuales y de género que se sienten más auténticas.

Biografía del autor/a

Sarah Lynne Bowman, Uppsala University

is a scholar, game designer, and event organizer. She is currently a Senior Lecturer for the Department of Game Design. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Texas at Austin in Radio-TV-Film, as well as her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Dallas in Arts and Humanities. In addition to Game Design, Bowman has taught in the Humanities, English, and Communication. She was also Program Coordinator for Peace & Conflict Studies in the Interdisciplinary Studies department at Austin Community College from 2020-2022.

At Uppsala, Bowman is a founding member of the Transformative Play Initiative research group, which investigates the design and practice of role-playing games as vehicles for personal and social change. She publishes regularly in scholarly and popular media about the transformative power of role-playing. McFarland Press published her dissertation in 2010 as The Functions of Role-playing Games: How Participants Create Community, Solve Problems, and Explore Identity. She has served as an editor for the peer-reviewed journal the International Journal of Role-Playing (2015-), the peer-reviewed Wyrd Con Companion Book (2012-2015), and the popular science magazine Nordiclarp.org. Josephine Baird, Uppsala University

is a Lecturer at the Uppsala University Department of Game Design and a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Vienna in Education. She holds a BSc. in Psychology and Philosophy and MSc. in Gender Studies, both from the London School of Economics. She is a game designer and game design consultant, as well as a writer and visual artist. Her work often relates the intersection between games, identity, gender, and sexualities. Her research and recent publications present the theoretical and methodological basis for her thesis that role-playing games might provide a potent opportunity for people to explore their gender subjectivity in safer environments. Her current research will conclude with the design of a live action role-playing game that puts this theoretical work into practice. She is also an actor, public speaker, and co-host of the podcast It Is Complicated. More information at josephinebaird.com
