Abstract
Most teachers are not satisfied with the evaluation they apply to their students. They are concerned about being fair and doing a good job, but they lack the command of some principles for it. This text is a summing up of some concepts about the subject. It presents mensuration and evaluation as genders, from which mensuration and evaluation of the student's proficiency are varieties, and shows how good evaluation is based upon good mensuration. It calls our attention to the fact that school teachers generally use unvalued or unreliable instruments as well as a non proportional intervallic scale, which prevents arithmetical calculation. It distinguishes a “mensuration concerning principles”, adequate to classifying objectives, from a “mensuration concerning a criterion”, appropriate for diagnostic purposes. The teacher concerned about having his students learn everything, should work with this Kind of mensuration and then introduce the evaluation, which will indicate if the course should be ratified or rectified.
