Abstract

This article deals with the use of legislation as a source in research on the history of education, taking as an example, above all, research experiences on an educational reform. To this end, it is based on bibliographical research and theoretical discussions related to historical research. Based on theorists such as Chartier and Julia, it is argued that working with educational legislation requires going beyond the prescribed, determined. It is necessary to verify how legislation (general or derived laws) is incorporated by society. General laws and derived legislation must, therefore, compose the documentary repertoire of researchers in the history of education due to the range of practices and representations they indicate, bringing them closer to the school culture of specific institutions at different times.
