Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between the characters Odete and Celina from the remake of the soap opera Vale Tudo as a case of psychological and financial violence covered under the Maria da Penha Law. Through this case, the study aims not only to raise awareness about these often-silenced forms of violence but also to demonstrate how the concept of gender operates as a theoretical-epistemological category, intertwined with the Foucauldian notion of power, to deepen the understanding of gender-based violence against women. This discussion further seeks to examine Communication as a key field for understanding the power-knowledge mechanisms that turn differences into inequalities in Culture, and whose symbolic production represents a crucial space for the reproduction, reinterpretation, or transformation of social value systems.
