Considering that science education plays a fundamental role in both integral humane education and the construction of a broader view of the world and society, and that science teaching in basic education should enhance the development of people with critical thinking and able to intervene in the world, aiming at improving the individual and collective quality of life, this study aims to discuss the epistemological bases of the National Common Curricular Base for science teaching in Elementary School. Through a qualitative and documentary approach, this study aims to analyze the manifest and latent content of the National Common Curricular Base document. The study of the Natural Sciences section of the National Common Curricular Base document focuses on the discourse of the text, its context, use and function. It was noted that, despite announcing a kind of teaching convergent with current studies on science education, the National Common Curricular Base the Elementary School science teaching proposal is disconnected from social issues that affect and interfere in students’ lives, and does not favor the articulation between different elements for the construction of science, thus moving away from current discussions in the field of science education.
