Challenges for digital inclusion in rural schools in the Piauí semi-arid region

Digital technologies are present and fundamental in virtually all sectors of social life. They encompass computer and telecommunications technology, including the internet and a range of electronic devices. Digital inclusion emerges as one of the concerns in this context, especially with regard to the rural population. In this regard, this paper seeks to discuss the challenges of digital inclusion by investigating the conditions and adoption of digital technologies in rural schools located in 12 municipalities in the Piauí Semiarid region, Brazil. To this end, exploratory research was conducted, including questionnaires administered to undergraduates, interviews with educators, and observation records. The data were subjected to thematic analysis. The results showed that the main challenges faced for digital inclusion in rural schools in the Piauí Semiarid region are related to the fragility of connectivity, manifested in its low quality, as well as the lack of computer labs, and the unpreparedness and lack of initiative among teachers. Also noteworthy is the lack of digital inclusion projects for this context.
